Josh Loves Hockey
Following is an open thank-you letter from Josh Stanek’s mother to Van Products and RHA Bridges CAP/C program after Josh attended a Carolina Hurricanes game. Josh received a free, wheelchair-accessible ticket when RHA Bridges CAP/C program won Van Products‘ ticket-giveaway contest…
Dear Van Products,
Josh Stanek is a typical six-year-old boy in many ways. He enjoys going to school even though he struggles with spelling. He hates going to bed early and taking baths. He loves animals — all kinds of animals. But what he loves more than anything else is sports – especially hockey! Yet Josh has some differences from other typical 6 year-old boys. Josh was born 4 months early, which has left him with Cerebral Palsy. Having Cerebral Palsy means that Josh can’t control his muscles like other children. He has had problems with his breathing and sometimes needs oxygen. He uses a wheelchair to get around and is unable to speak even simple words.

But if you want to see Josh’s true personality, come to his house when Carolina Hurricanes hockey is on television. His eyes never drift from the TV, he makes noise if you obstruct his view, and he fights even harder to stay awake until the end of the game! Josh’s obsession with hockey began when he was about three years old.
His parents are both hockey fans, so it’s not hard to figure out why he enjoys the game. Josh’s favorite position in hockey is goalie, so it’s also no surprise that his favorite Hurricanes are Cam Ward and Justin Peters. He even dressed as Cam Ward for Halloween and used his wheelchair in the costume as the goal!
As much as Josh enjoys watching hockey on television, he enjoys it even more at the RBC Center, watching in person.

Josh is served by RHA Howell’s Bridges CAP/C program, many people there participated in the contest just to win tickets for our CAP/C kids. Josh was one of those kids and he couldn’t have been happier. Thank you so much!
